Rasing baby chics

It's obvious that the eggs came way before the chickens! Many pre chicken animals came from eggs, reptiles, birds, fish. That is a fact. But for my project, we start with the chicken eggs. Here we have a couple of options, a broody hen, or with a friend, we have a incubator running all the time, I take my favorite chicken's eggs and set them up for a 21 days journey to a new life.

After a month, ones they are strong i bring them to that farm. They stay in a pen for a wild, specially now with the new puppys 2 small border colie a only few months old.

For the Broilers the story is different. I order baby chicks from a local supplier. I brood them in a old camper trailer, with a propane heater and a led light. The run is split in 5 different areas, ones the chicks are 20 30 days old, we rotate the birds, opening one patio per week, giving time to the grass to recover, in a way that the birds never come back to the same patio, before going to the freezer.

With the bedding, we start a new compost pile every week. Wich we then use it to add in the patios, but there is too much for the area, so we end up storing them everywhere, under trees, tarps, in the forest, in the driveway. We let it age for a few months before using them for starting seeds but we can mulch right away, if we need it.

A perfect close loop would be if I grew all the chicken feed. But perfect is overrated, for me 7 is the new 10! Also, I am looking to liss 2 hectares to grow some corn and other grains hopefully, this is the year I can finally do it. This is to explain, that a some what close loop means that you have inputs to the system and that is normally expensive, or is hard to do. In the case of the Broilers, being 70% of the cost just on feed, means I'm not in control of cost of production, and that isn't a nice place to be. Doesn't means that I shouldn't rase broilers, just that I gotta be prepared.

¡Es obvio que los huevos llegaron mucho antes que las gallinas! Muchos animales anteriores a las gallinas procedían de huevos, reptiles, pájaros, peces. Eso es un hecho. Pero para mi proyecto, comenzamos con los huevos de gallina. Aquí tenemos un par de opciones, una gallina clueca, o con una amiga, tenemos una incubadora funcionando todo el tiempo, elijo huevos de mis gallinas favoritas y los preparo para un viaje de 21 días hacia una nueva vida. Después de un mes, los que están fuertes los traigo a esa granja. Se quedan en un corral por un tiempo, especialmente ahora con cachorritos nuevos, 2 pequeños border colie de solo unos meses.

Para los pollos de engorde la historia es diferente. Encargo pollitos a un proveedor local. Los crío en una vieja casa rodante, con un calentador a gas y una luz LED. El corral se divide en 5 áreas diferentes, una ves los pollitos tienen plumas, les damos paso a un patio por semana, dando tiempo al pasto para que se recupere, de manera que las aves nunca vuelvan al mismo patio , antes de ir al congelador. Con la cama de los pollos, comenzamos una nueva pila de compost cada semana. Que luego lo usamos para agregar en los patios, pero hay demasiado para el área, por lo que terminamos almacenándolos en todas partes, debajo de los árboles, lonas, en el bosque, en el camino de entrada. Lo dejamos envejecer durante unos meses antes de usarlos para comenzar las semillas, pero podemos utilizarlo de inmediato, si lo necesitamos. Un ciclo cerrado perfecto sería producir todo el alimento para pollos. Pero lo perfecto está sobrevalorado, para mí el 7 es el nuevo 10! Además, estoy buscando arrendar 2 hectáreas para cultivar algo de maíz y otros granos, con suerte, este es el año en que finalmente puedo hacerlo. Esto es para explicar que un ciclo cerrado significa que tiene entradas para el sistema y eso normalmente es costoso o difícil de hacer. En el caso de los pollos de engorde, tenemos el 70 % del costo solo en el alimento significa que no tengo el control del costo de producción, y ese no es un buen lugar para estar. No significa que no deba criar pollos de engorde, solo que debo estar preparado. Ya les iré enseñando cuando tenga los pollitos y los diferentes patios…
